The answer is blowing in the wind – literally. When the mercury in most lamps joins with the calcium phosphate powder, the potential for exposure is widespread. After the lamps are broken and crushed in dumpsters, mercury vapors escape into the atmosphere only to fall back to earth when it rains, contaminating the water supply, fish and anyone that consumes them.
